Waste to Products - Workshop

Waste to Products - Workshop

We recently hosted the Waste to Products workshop at Kuwait University’s College of Architecture, focusing on the environmental impact of the furniture industry and the waste it generates. Students explored key strategies for reducing waste—buying only what is needed, reusing existing pieces, and prioritizing quality over price. The session also introduced the furniture kit, a tool that allows users to assemble and customize their interior spaces. This approach helps to determine exactly what they need before purchasing, reducing the likelihood of overbuying and ensuring they choose the right size. To achieve a zero-waste product, the extra wood from the kit’s production was repurposed by students to create their own chairs.

In the hands-on session, students worked with these leftover materials to assemble unique chairs, showcasing their creativity while learning about upcycling in sustainable furniture design. This activity demonstrated how discarded materials could be transformed into functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces, reinforcing the potential of waste-conscious design.

By combining theory with practice, the workshop highlighted the importance of conscious design choices in minimizing waste. It encouraged students to rethink material use and embrace sustainability in their future work, reinforcing the role of innovative solutions in shaping a more responsible furniture industry.
